Living History Books from Scholastic: Ten True Tales Series

**Complimentary products received in exchange for our honest review.  All opinions are ours and ours alone**

As homeschoolers, books are our most important tool for learning.  Our favorite place to find great books is Scholastic.  We can always count on finding wonderful books at affordable prices every time we shop.

For the next few weeks we will posting several roundup posts for some of our favorite Scholastic releases for Spring and early Summer reading.

When it comes to learning about history, we love to read living books that really bring the past to life.   The Ten True Tales series from Scholastic is a fantastic way to do just that.  Each book contains 10 exciting stories based on the actual people that lived them.

Our latest favorites are World War I Heroes, Titanic Young Survivors and Vietnam War Heroes.

Titanic: Young Survivors

About This Book:

Eleven-year-old Billy Carter kneels down on the slanting deck of the Titanic and hugs his beloved dog — a tan and black Airedale. Can Billy save himself and his pet?

Fifteen-year-old Edith Brown and her mother climb into Lifeboat 14. Edith begs her father to join them. Why won't he?

Seventeen-year-old Jack Thayer looks over the side of the sinking Titanic and stares into the frigid sea. There are no lifeboats left. He knows he has to jump, but can he?

These and other young people came from many walks of life. Now, on the night of April 14, 1912, they all face a life-or-death crisis abroad the Titanic. When the unthinkable occurs, can they survive?

Vietnam War Heroes

About This Book:

Twenty-eight soldiers — all but five badly wounded or dead in the first few minutes of a devastating ambush — are fending off 200 North Vietnamese soldiers. US platoon leader Lieutenant Hal Fritz shouts to his comrades, "We will never give up!"

Dozens of severely wounded soldiers are trapped in a fog-shrouded outpost and under merciless attack by the enemy. No other medical helicopter pilot will dare attempt a rescue, except for Major Patrick Brady.

These and other American heroes risked their lives serving their country in the Vietnam War. You will never forget their courageous true stories.

World War I Heroes

About This Book:

Corporal Alvin York is armed only with courage and marksmanship. Can he save his unit under deadly attack by German machine-gun nests?

Plucked off his sinking ship by a U-boat, Navy Lieutenant Edouard Izak is sent to a POW camp deep in German territory. Can he engineer a daring escape?

The soldiers of the 8th Illinois — all African Americans — face bitter racism and segregation. Can they overcome bigotry to fight with valor and distinction?

These and other brave heroes risked their lives serving their country in World War I. You will never forget their courageous true stories.

Each story is short, but full of detail, painting an amazingly true-to-life picture that allows kids (and adults) to learn about the event in an in depth and personal way.

There is also a glossary full of words that the reader may not know, which is very helpful.  My kiddos retain way more of the info they learn from these books than they do when reading dry textbooks.

I would highly recommend the Ten True Tales series to readers ages 8 and up!
