July 20, 2019 will be the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing. Celebrate these incredible feats of human resilience and discovery with some of our favorite books for middle graders from Scholastic.

By Tod Olson

This exciting second book in the Lost series tells the incredible true story of the doomed Apollo 13 moon mission that nearly ended in disaster.

On April 11, 1970, the Apollo 13 space shuttle set off for the third intended American moon landing. Two days later and 200,000 miles from Earth, disaster struck when an oxygen tank exploded on board the spacecraft, leaving three astronauts with only one goal: to make it home alive. From "Houston, we've had a problem" to the final tense moments at Mission Control, Lost in Outer Space takes readers along on the unbelievable journey of Apollo 13 and inside the minds of its famous and heroic astronauts, including legendary Commander Jim Lovell.

Complete with photographs of the crew and diagrams of the spacecraft, this is an up close and personal look at one of the most thrilling survival stories of all time.

This book is super exciting and engaging for any kiddo even remotely interested in space travel!

Only a small percentage of people will visit space in their lifetime, but now you don't have to be an astronaut to see our universe in stunning detail! In Space: The Definitive Visual Catalog, you will be transported to our solar system and galaxies far beyond with the help of incredibly detailed color photographs from NASA and the International Space Station. Full of amazing facts and key information about the planets and stars in our solar system as well as recently discovered galaxies, Space is the only book you'll need to learn everything there is to know about the astounding world beyond our planet.

This is a beautiful reference book that will remain on our science bookshelf for years to come.  It is really well done and a great collection of space related pictures and information.

If your middle grade kiddos are interested in space, make sure to add these books to their summer reading list!  If you have younger kiddos, check out Scholastic for tons of other space themed books for all ages!
